As an Independent Consultant between 2002 – 2004 I achieved the following:

  • 2003, Somalia, Food Security Analysis Unit (FSAU), FAO. Developed livestock indicators to incorporate into the Household Economy Analysis of pastoral and agro-pastoral communities in Somalia. Concentrated on developing indicators that could be used for early warning, predicting likely outcomes and recommending appropriate and timely interventions.

  • 2003, Ethiopia and Kenya, FARM-Africa. Carried out a project evaluation and proposal preparation for the Afar Project. Covered pastoralist issues in the Ethiopian PRSP. Wrote and jointly edited the five “Best Practices” paper published by FARM-Arica’s Pastoralist Project.

  • 2002, Kenya, Oxfam. Drew up a Code of Conduct for harmonized animal health service delivery for NGOs and stakeholders in North-Eastern Kenya for PACT Inc., ALRMP, CAPE, and Oxfam.

  • 2002, Kenya, Sudan, and Ethiopia, PACT and Farm-Africa. Carried out research and submitted three pastoralist project proposals for the EU and USAID in Kenya, Sudan, and Ethiopia.

  • 2002, Maasailand, Spiersent Ltd and Enkereyon farm. Established a community/private sector eco-tourism venture with camels in Maasailand.

  • 1990, Ethiopia, Save the Children. Evaluated on-going programs in the Afar region and provided recommendations for future programming.

  • 1987, Kenya, FARM-Africa. Researched pastoralists’ perceptions and needs for a camel development project in Northern Kenya through dialogue with camel owners, scientists, government officials, anthropologists, development and donor agencies. Drew up the proposal, including budgets. Obtained government approval and successfully approached funding agencies to finance the new and pioneering project.
